Taste buds were buzzing last Tuesday at Dish Cooking Studio in Toronto, where three teams of young chefs went head-to-head in a friendly cook-off that wowed guests and showcased the magic of the beyond 3:30 Junior Chefs’ Club.

The day started with excited jitters and quick team huddles. Each team had just one hour to cook, plate, and present their dish to the judges. Nerve-wracking? Absolutely. But these kids were ready after weeks of practice at beyond 3:30, TFSS’s free after-school program for grades 3–8 that offers academic support, physical activity, culturally relevant arts, and, through the Junior Chefs’ Club, hands-on kitchen time preparing healthy, delicious dinners for their friends each school night.

The Cook-Off Begins!

The kids warmed up with a kitchen safety demo, expert tips, and a practice round making delicious breakfast burritos. By the time judges and guests arrived, they were fueled, focused, and ready. One-hour timer set… let the magic begin!

Team 1 created their Aloha Fusion Chicken Stir Fry by carving pineapples like pros and turning the rinds into creative bowls. Crispy chicken, tender rice, and sautéed veggies were tossed in a ginger–sweet chili sauce, then piled high in the pineapple shells and topped with fresh cilantro.

Meanwhile, Team 2’s Curry Chicken with Roti and Garden Salad started with expertly rolled dough for soft, fluffy roti. They cooked tender chicken in a golden, spice-packed sauce bursting with cumin, coriander, and turmeric, then plated it alongside a fresh, crisp garden salad.

Team 3’s Butter Chicken over Jeera Rice with Cucumber Salad wowed guests with tender chicken in a rich, velvety sauce, served over fragrant jeera rice and finished with beautifully arranged vegetable garnishes.

Time’s Up!

Already impressed by the aromas and the teamwork on display, the judges were now ready to taste! The panel included Moez Kassam (Moez & Marissa Equity Fund),  Whilna Stewart-Franklin (UPS Canada), Gregory Sam (LesLois Shaw Foundation) and Natalie Stanbra (Oliver & Bonacini), all foodies and huge beyond 3:30 supporters.

Here’s what they loved:

  • Team 1: “Beautiful creativity and perfectly sautéed veggies!”
  • Team 2: “Incredible roti! Especially made in under an hour!”
  • Team 3: “Risky but delicious spice levels—and the presentation is spot on!”

And the winner is… Team 3!

All three teams walked away with gifts and well-earned praise for their creativity, teamwork, and can-do spirit.

The Secret Ingredient

When asked what made their meal special, one team answered simply: “love.”

This is the magic of beyond 3:30’s Junior Chefs’ Club: kids discovering that cooking healthy, delicious food is just as much about sharing and building community as it is about flavour.

As the Cook-Off came to a close, the smiles, full bellies, and proud hearts said it all. These young chefs had served up outstanding meals with skill, creativity, teamwork, and that last sprinkle that matters most: love.
