Feed Tomorrow: VIP Guests Visit School Nutrition Programs “Student Style”

TORONTO, October 18, 2016.  As part of the 12th annual feed tomorrow week, hosted by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success, VIPs will meet at St. Lawrence Market, board school buses and travel to two schools, Rose Avenue JPS and Brock PS, to see a breakfast program in action. At Rose Avenue JPS, The Hon. Michael Coteau, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Anti-Racism will speak about the importance of nutrition programs. The school visits will be followed by a reception at the St. Lawrence Market, with food provided by the St. Lawrence Market Merchants.

One out of three children here in Toronto lives in poverty and over 175,000 children and youth rely on breakfast, snack or lunch served at 825 school-based nutrition programs to make it through the day. 

WHAT: Nutrition Program Bus Tour - A group of VIPs will travel on school buses, “student style”, to two public schools where they will see nutrition programs in action. They will meet with community volunteers and children and learn first-hand about the needs these programs address.

WHEN: Wednesday, October 19, 7:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.                     

7:30 a.m.              Guests arrive for a light breakfast at the St. Lawrence Market Kitchen.

8:00 a.m.              Bus leaves for Rose Avenue JPS.

8:30 a.m.              Guests will visit the breakfast program in the lunchroom at Rose Avenue JPS.  

9:00 a.m.              The Honourable Michael Coteau, Minister of Children and Youth Services and Minister Responsible for Anti-Racism, will highlight the importance of student nutrition programs.

9:10 a.m.              A cheque presentation will be made by Breakfast Club of Canada.

9:45 a.m.              Bus leaves Rose Avenue JPS.

10:35 a.m.           Guests are welcomed at Brock PS where they will learn about the school’s morning meal program. VIPs will be able to accompany students as they deliver meals to classrooms and visit their Rooftop Garden/Outdoor Classroom.

11:30 a.m.           Bus leaves for St. Lawrence Market.

12:00 p.m.           Guests attend reception at St. Lawrence Market Kitchen. (Food provided by the St. Lawrence Market Merchants,)

Feed tomorrow week.  October 17, marked the beginning of the 12th annual feed tomorrow week, five days when student volunteers, educators, supporters, politicians and public figures raise awareness and collect pledges to feed Toronto’s hungry children. Feed tomorrow week is hosted by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success and proclaimed by the City of Toronto.
